FEST plants 2,500 trees with Trees for All

Trees are one of the tools against climate change. That’s why we’ve joined forces with the Trees for All foundation and they’re planting 2,500 trees in Ghana on behalf of FEST.

Why FEST wants to plant trees

Trees for All is a non-profit organization, founded in 1999 and located in the beautiful Dutch city of Utrecht. They plant trees all over the world, restore existing forests and reduce CO2 emissions. A great cause, we think. And since part of our furniture and home décor is made of wood, we’d like to give something back to the earth with those 2,500 trees.

FEST

Why it's necessary

The trees are planted in the Bongo District. A place where beautiful Baobabs grow – you know: those big trees with thick trunks and flat tops you’ve probably seen in The Lion King – but it’s also one of the driest areas in the region. This is because there’s only one water source: the reservoir of the VEA Dam, into which the Yarigatanga River flows.

Farmers depend on the dam to irrigate their land. And at the same time, it’s the drinking water supply for the surrounding villages. But with just 70 days of rain a year and poor soil, desertification forms a threat. As a result, farmers are moving a little further towards the riverbanks. Which leads to deforestation of the river banks and erosion, causing the river and the VEA reservoir to silt up.

FEST

How it’s solved

That's pretty bad, so Trees for All is doing something about it. By reinforcing the banks and planting no less than 220,000 trees, 2,500 of which are on behalf of FEST. How do they keep it sustainable? By training 1,600 farmers from surrounding villages in sustainable land use.

There’s more...

Our collaboration with Trees for All does not stop at those 2,500 trees. On the contrary, but we'll tell you more about that later! So stay tuned. ;)
